BURLI - editing audio

Basic editing

Multi-track editing

Burli's audio editor features a green on black wave graph, a time bar showing minutes and seconds, a marker bar for adding reference points within the wave graph, a VU meter and a toolbar.

To edit an existing piece of audio, drag it from the In-queue to the lower Work folder. Audio editing can only be done in a local (work) folder.

PLAY AUDIO

Click the toolbar's play button to begin playback at the beginning of the audio file. A vertical bar moves across the audio graph to indicate the current play position. Click the right mouse button anywhere in the wave graph to start playback from that point. A green timer (bottom-right corner of the Burli screen) counts down the remaining audio, and turns yellow when less than five seconds remain.

STOP PLAYBACK

Press the F10 key, or click the stop icon in the toolbar. If a wave graph is not currently visible, you can stop audio playback and recording by clicking the stop button in the main Burli toolbar (lefthand side of the screen).

SELECTING AUDIO

Selected audio appears with a white background (see the middle of the audio graph, above), and is used to isolate usable audio cuts, delete unwanted audio, etc.

Move the mouse pointer over the audio graph, then hold down the left mouse button as you move the mouse to another location in the graph. As you move the mouse, Burli displays the resulting selection. Release the left mouse button to complete the selection.

DELETING AUDIO SELECTION

Click the wave toolbar's 'audio delete' button (scissors icon) to delete the selected audio. After deleting the audio, Burli rebuilds the audio graph - placing a blue marker in the file to indicate the edit - and replays a few seconds of audio around the deletion so you can hear the edit.

MULTI TRACK EDITING

Burli's multi-track editor is a sophisticated audio tool designed for journalists who wish to mix voice, sound or music across several tracks.

To create a new multi-track Audio Project, go to the New menu, and select Audio project. The multi-track opens in the secondary work window in the top half of the screen.

To name or rename an Audio Project, simply type the name of your choice in the top right of the Multi-Track window.

ADDING AND REMOVING TRACKS

By default, Burli creates 4 tracks when you open a new audio project. To additional tracks to your audio project, simply press the + (plus) key on your and a new track will appear at the bottom.

To remove a track from your audio project, press the - (minus) key on the numeric (main section of the) keyboard and the track will be removed.

INSERTING AUDIO

From your lower work folder, drag/drop an audio item to a track of your choice.

Audio blocks can be moved vertically to any track and/or moved horizontally to any position in the timeline of your project. You may also select/drag /drop a selection (clip) of an audio item from your lower work folder anywhere into the multi-track.

EDITING AUDIO

The multi-track editor allows you to edit audio in three different modes: Move, Edit, and Envelope mode.

MOVE MODE

Move mode lets you move audio clips blocks anywhere within a multi-track project.

1. Make sure you are in Move Mode by pressing the Move Mode button.
2. Left-click any block of audio. Notice that when clicked the block gets a red border to indicate that it is the active block.
3. Drag and drop the selected block
- to any location on the same track.
- to any location on a different track.
- on top of another audio block.

EDIT MODE

In Edit Mode the multi-track editor behaves very much like the single-track editor. As the name suggests, Edit Mode is used to delete, insert, separate, clear or reposition audio on one or more tracks.

Selecting an audio clip

To highlight a selection (clip) of an audio block, left-click/drag the cursor across the portion of audio you want to work with. The selected audio shows pink with a white background.

Adjusting a selection

1. Hold the cursor over the outside edge of a selection (left or right); the cursor changes to a double-headed black arrow.
2. Left-click and drag the edge of the selection to the left or right. If you have Scrub Play enabled, you will hear the audio at the current position.

Clearing audio clip selections
To clear audio clip selection in a specific block, simply press the BACKSPACE button on the keyboard or left-click on an area not highlighted within the chosen audio block.

Clearing audio clip selections using the BACKSPACE button will only affect the active audio block.

ENVELOPE MODE

The envelope mode allows you to edit volume levels of individual clips on each track.

Editing volume (envelope) points
Envelope markers can be adjusted as much as you like. To change the position of an existing marker:
1. Place your cursor above the white marker to be edited.
2. Wait for the cursor to change into a four-headed arrow.
3. Left-click and drag the marker to its desired new location.

Adjusting the volume of an entire audio block
Sometimes, if the levels of an entire clip are too high or too low, the best fix is to boost the levels of the entire clip at once. You can do this quickly in ANY mode (not just Envelope Mode) using the arrow keys on the keyboard:

1. In Move Mode, select (click on) the audio block you wish to change.
2. Press and hold the UP arrow. The red envelope line and the waveform itself will increase equally across the entire block.
3. Press and hold DOWN arrow. The red envelope line and the waveform itself will decrease equally across the entire block.
To remove or undo the changes, press the Backspace key on the keyboard or press the Undo button on the audio editor’s toolbar.
